Country Life | Pyrography + Watercolor on Wood

Country Life is a mixed-media landscape created with pyrography and watercolor on wood. The piece features a quiet rural scene filled with old farm buildings, stone walls, distant mountains, trees, open fields, a pond, and two geese moving through the water.

The artwork began as a traditional pyrography piece, with the landscape drawn and burned directly into the wood by hand. Years after completing this piece, I returned and added transparent watercolor washes, bringing new depth and separation to the mountains, fields, buildings, stone, and water while allowing the original burned details and natural wood grain to remain visible.

Rather than covering the pyrography, the watercolor works alongside it. Fine burned lines create the architectural details, textures, shadows, and character of the landscape, while the muted watercolor adds atmosphere and a subtle sense of place. The result brings together two processes I love while still allowing the wood itself to be an important part of the finished artwork.

Details: Pyrography and watercolor on wood, measuring approximately 11.5 × 7.5 inches. The finished artwork is protected with polyurethane for added durability and preservation.
